Manchester City v Sunderland
Verdict: Manchester City has the perfect opportunity to strengthen their hold on a Champions' League qualifying spot with Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham all dropping points yesterday. Sunderland find themselves in mid-table and will look to push in to the top 10, a target they set as a minimum at the beginning of the season.
Manchester City's recent form is a microcasm of their inconsistency this season. Their return of 23 goals in 15 home fixtures is not good enough for a side looking to challenge for the title. Sunderland has been in poor form in recent months but the international break will give their relatively small squad a well earned rest while the return of Cattermole and Wellbeck will make the Black Cats more competitive. Sunderland seem to lift their game against the bigger sides, gaining points at Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool this term. Manchester City will continue to miss Kolo Toure while Zabaleta, Richards, and Boateng are unlikely to feature - that is almost the Sky Blues' first choice backline. Gyan will be licking his lips at facing Lescott again following his midweek goal for Ghana against England. I expect a tight game with a possible upset on the cards.
